How to Make Sourdough Butter Crackers at Home

Updated: Sep 20

Making your own sourdough butter crackers is easier than you might think, and the results are absolutely delicious. These crackers are perfect for snacking, serving with cheese, or enjoying with your favorite dip. Plus, they're a great way to use up some of your sourdough discard.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sourdough starter (unfed or discard)

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more for sprinkling

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon Everything Bagel Seasoning (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter and softened butter. Mix well.

  2. Add the flour, salt, and any optional seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, paprika). Mix until a dough forms.

  3. Place the dough on a floured surface and knead it a few times until smooth. Divide the dough into two equal parts.

  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Flour the parchment paper generously.

  5. Roll out one portion of the dough thinly, about 1/16 inch thick. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into squares or rectangles. Prick each cracker with a fork to prevent them from puffing up too much.

  6. Sprinkle the Everything Bagel Seasoning evenly over the crackers.

  7. Place the crackers on the prepared baking sheet and sprinkle with a little extra salt.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crackers are golden brown and crisp. Keep an eye on them, as baking time may vary depending on thickness.

  9. Repeat the rolling, cutting, and baking process with the remaining dough.

  10. Allow the crackers to cool completely on a wire rack before storing them in an airtight container. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • These crackers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

  • Feel free to customize the seasonings to suit your taste. Try adding dried herbs, Parmesan cheese, or even a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning.

  • Experiment with different flours for a unique flavor. Whole wheat or rye flour can add a nutty taste to your crackers.

Making sourdough butter crackers at home is a fun and rewarding experience. Plus, you'll love the taste of these homemade crackers compared to store-bought ones. Give this recipe a try and enjoy the delicious results!
